Hello pet owners and aspiring pet owners. Have you heard of pet insurance? Do you think it’s necessary? All these and more will be discussed in this post. Pets aren’t just animals, they are companions and family.
Our joy and happiness will be incomplete without their unconditional love in our lives. However, as much as we wish for their health and happiness, unexpected veterinary bills can become a financial burden. This is where you use pet insurance. It’s like a safety net that helps you cover the medical bills.
What is Pet Insurance?

It is a type of health insurance designed for pets. Similar to human health insurance, pet insurance covers certain medical expenses. All you need to do is pay a monthly or annual token, and in return, your insurance company reimburses you for a portion of your pet’s eligible veterinary bills.
Just as variety is the spice of life, pet insurance has varieties. It is categorised based on the provider, type of insurance and your pet’s needs. So, whether it’s a dog, cat or other exotic pets there’s always something available that protects their health.
Types of Pet Insurance

Before making a choice on the type of insurance you want for your pets, here are a few things to consider:
- Genetic makeup
- Age
- Lifestyle
Now, here are the main types of pet insurance we have.
1. Accident Only Plan
This is the most affordable type plan. It covers the basics and provides financial protection in the event of unexpected accidents, such as:
- Broken bones
- Burns
- Cuts or lacerations
- Ingestion of foreign object
This is ideal for pets are prone to accidents due to their environment or lifestyle
2. Comprehensive (Accident-Illness) Plan
Accident-illness plans offer more coverage. In addition to accidents, it covers the following:
- Cancer
- Chronic conditions
- Hereditary diseases
- Infections
Typically, this plan covers diagnostic tests, medications, surgeries and treatments. If you are looking for a more inclusive financial protection for your pets, get an accident-illness plan.
3. Pet Wellness Plan
This is for clients who love to go the extra mile. Some insurance providers include wellness care in the accident-illness package, while most don’t. Pet wellness plan covers the following:
- Annual check-ups
- Dental appointments
- Flea and tick prevention
- Vaccinations
Adding this plan to your comprehensive or accident-only plan keeps your animal health in check. However, keep in mind that wellness plans are a separate add-on and may have different limits than other plans.
How Does Pet Insurance Work?
1. Choose a Policy: Don’t overdo yourself. Get a plan you can afford and suit your pet’s needs. You can customize your plan by selecting an annual payout limit, deductible, and reimbursement rate.
2. Pay Your Premium: After choosing your policy, you pay for your premium. It could be monthly or annually. (I recommend annually).
3. Visit your Veterinary Doctor: If your pet becomes ill or injured, take them to a vet for diagnosis and treatment. Remember to keep all receipts and documentation for the treatment received.
4. Submit a Claim: After paying for the vet bills upfront, submit a claim to your insurance provider. Most companies allow you to do this online or via mail.
5. Get Reimbursed: If the expenses are covered under your policy, your insurance company will reimburse you according to your policy’s terms. This means they will pay a percentage of the eligible costs after you have met your deductible.
What Does Pet Insurance Cover
Your coverage depends on the insurance policy you use. However, most pet owners tend to choose accident-illness plan which covers the following:
- Diagnostics: blood tests, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray.
- Medications: Medications prescribed by your veterinarian for treating or managing chronic conditions.
- Surgery and hospitalization: This covers costs associated with surgical procedures, hospitalization, and post-surgery care.
- Cancer treatment: This covers chemotherapy, drugs and radiation.
- Emergency care ER visits: This includes specialist care for critical conditions.
- Breed-specific conditions: Some policies cover health issues that are common to certain breeds. For instance hip dysplasia in large breed dogs.
- Wellness care: If you include a wellness plan, your pet is covered for basic routine care such as dental care, tick prevention and vaccinations.
What Doesn’t Pet Insurance Cover?
Your pet insurance covers some but not all costs. Common exclusions include:
- Cosmetic procedures such as tail docking, and ear cropping.
- Elective procedures such as dental care, neutering or spaying. But if you have the wellness plan, your pet is exempted.
- Pre-existing conditions: If your pet had a medical condition before you purchased the policy, it’s most likely not to be covered.
Routine care is available unless you are under the wellness plan.
Benefits of Pet Insurance
- Customizable Coverage: You can customize and choose your deductible, reimbursement rate, and payout limit. How sweet! So, regardless of your budget, there’s always something for you.
- Financial Protection: The economy can be harsh sometimes and the unexpected burden of veterinary bills can be overwhelming, especially in times of emergencies. Pet insurance can be your lifesaver.
- Peace of Mind:Nothing beats peace of mind. Knowing that your pet’s health is insured is a sweet feeling.
